Winter Skiing
You can enjoy a beach and ski holiday from Cannes in winter. The nearest ski resort is Greoliere - the pistes have been widened and improved for this year. There is a bus every Saturday, and daily during school holidays, from Grasse. Take the train from Cannes to Grasse: the bus leaves from the station at 8.15am and departs Greolieres at 5pm.  Tel: 08 00 06 01 06
The Skibus leaves Cannes at 7am for the ski slopes of Isola 2000 and Auron every day during the holidays and every Saturday and Sunday during the season. It costs 37 euros, including a ski pass, and leaves from Square Merimee. It departs the ski resort at 5pm.
Isola 2000 can be reached by bus from Nice for just 8 euros for the round trip. You can go for a day or longer. You have to reserve a seat, see www.lignesdazur.com 100% neige. You can buy a Carte Cimes at Isola which is like a credit card - for Londoners think Oyster card. It costs 1.50 euros and you can charge it up online or at the ski station. Pop it in your pocket and, hey sesame, you can  go on the ski lifts without queuing.
Fancy driving on ice? Val d'Allos opens 15 December and even children can have a go. Prices from 10-30 euros for 15 minutes. See www.groupe24.fr
Val d'Allos can be reached by bus from Nice Airport every Saturday 45 euros return. Reservation essential at Haut Verdon Voyages tel: 04 92 83 95 81
At Isola 2000 there are various formulas for cars as well Kart Cross, quads and buggies (see left) all on ice. See www.circuitdeglace.com

AND there are the famous one euro buses to Auron, Isola 2000, Valberg and at weekends La Colmiane. These are normal bus routes and the first departure for Auron and Isola is 9.45am and 9am for La Colmiane from Nice Vauban; and 10.30am from Nice railway station for Valberg. Buy your tickets on board. More suitable for a couple of days or more skiing.

For further information about events - and a lot more besides - go to the Cannes tourist offices (office de tourisme).

A very good free booking service is to be found at FNAC, 83 rue d'Antibes.  In the entrance hall is a desk where you can buy tickets for all major events in Cannes and elsewhere, including concerts, shows and sports fixtures.
FNAC is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 7pm (extended to 7.30pm during July and August).

OUTDOORS

Sweeties invaded Cannes in 2011.  All over town these two to five meter high sculptures are giving us all something to chew on.

Created by Laurence Jenkell (see right), each of the 55 pieces comes in the colours of a European country or in the colours of a G20 country.

Hardly a co-incidence as the G20 conference starts here in Cannes on November 5.

So there's your answer.

Fireworks Festival

All start at 10pm. One of the best places to see the fireworks from the Croisette, and hear the music, is near the JW Marriott hotel. If you want to avoid a cricked neck you can hire sunbeds on the beach and lie back to enjoy the view. All the hotels and beach restaurants are open for dinner - do make a reservation in advance though. View the fireworks from a boat, 20 euros pp leaving at 9.15pm. Must book - 04 92 98 71 30 or at Quai Laubeuf

Every summer a sandcastle artist can be found on the beach creating the most amazing works of art.  Sadly he is not officially recognised by the town and each night his work is bulldozed.

So get out your cameras - these works are genuinely fleeting. But the next day, he builds a different one to delight us.

Surely it's time for the town council to stop harassing this guy who is a true artist. loved by locals and visitors alike.

Streetwise
Cannes is truly an outdoor art gallery and of course it's all free to enjoy as you stroll around town. Fashion lovers should head to the Croisette and rue d'Antibes where there are huge fashion photos by top photographers in summer.
