Cannes Travel Guide - Getting here

There are a number of ways of getting to Cannes: by road from Calais (see below) - 1200 kilometers, 11 hours, 100+ euros in tolls;  train from St Pancras - 8/9 hours; flying with British Airways, Easyjet, Air France, Aer Lingus, Jet2  and Ryanair (Dublin).

Did you know...
Nice Cote d'Azur airport has two terminals with a free shuttle bus between them. It is France's second busiest airport, after Paris, and can handle 13 millions passengers a year. You can fly from Nice to 103 destinations in 34 countries.

Nice Airport to Cannes

Take your pick from a hire car, taxi, people carrier, chauffeur driven limousine to a helicopter or a power boat - and even a chauffeur driven motorbike. Some hotels have free shuttle buses so check when booking.

There is also the coach, Aéroport Express number 210 - costing 25.50 return, 15.60 single - which leaves every half an hour. Tickets can be bought at the office in the bus stations at Terminals 1 and 2.  The journey takes about 50 minutes. Be aware the last coach leaves from Terminal 1 at 8pm and five minutes later from Terminal 2.

See 210 bus schedule.

At 20.45 and 21.55 The 200 bus leaves from terminal 1 and takes one hour plus to reach Cannes (1 euro).

For the brave traveller there is a bus, which leaves every half an hour on the main road opposite Terminal 1 (tunnel under the road and turn left, left again up the steps and then right to bus stop) - Ligne 200 - costing just one euro each way, taking up to 1h 50 mins to Cannes.

See N200 night bus.

BY RAIL

One other way is to catch a 23 bus (1) from terminal one.  Two stops later is the St Augustin railway station where you can get a train to Cannes (approx 5). It can be walked in 15 minutes but not with a heavy suitcase. Or take a taxi to the station.

Cannes travel tip: If driving, there is a quicker way back to the airport from Cannes on the A8 motorway than signposted.

Come off at junction 49 and at the first roundabout take the second exit (underneath the height restrictors).  Go through the tunnel to the second roundabout and take the first exit on to the N7.  Keep to the right, cross the river and the next exit leads you to the airport.

Choose terminal one or terminal two.

Now here's a great idea that makes flying by private jet affordable. French air taxi service Wijet ferries businessmen across Europe by private jet. These planes often travel one way empty so CoJetage has been born. Up to four people can share a private jet on the empty leg - or you can book all four places. Prices start from 160 euros per person but the downside is you have to be very flexible. Who knows where the next jet may be flying from or to...

Cannes has the second busiest private airport in France after Le Bourget by the way.

Driving to Cannes

Insider Tip: you can plan your route with www.viamichelin.co.uk and enjoy a gastronic drive through France

A useful place for an overnight stay, Tournus, is 668 kilometers (415 miles) from Calais.  It takes about five hours by motorway.

Hotel St Philibert at 19 avenue Gambetta is an attractive, reasonably priced stopover - 49 per room + 7 for breakfast. Tel: 03 85 51 00 44. Or try the relais and chateau hotel opposite, costing somewhat more.

Visit the superb abbey, St-Philibert, parts of which date back to the 10th Century. Classed as one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture, it is worth lingering and exploring the crypt, chancel, and of course the magnificent nave.

Eat out at the Bourgogne Restaurant in the centre of town at Rue du Docteur Privey with the 15or the 20 menu and taste the Burgundy specialities of Fromage de tete (brains), snails, tripe or more conventional dishes like coq au vin.  Remember to book because it is very popular - the chef used to work at the relais and chateau restaurant.  Tel: 03 85 51 12 23

If it is closed, such as on Wednesdays, a very good alternative is Le Fenelon, 2 rue Fenelon,

which has menus at 14 and 19 and as well as reasonably priced wines

- Macon at 13 - there is a bin end selection which included a delicious

Chinon at 30 when we were there last.  email restolefenelon@orange.fr

Tel 03 85 51 07 25

Going back to UK?

One last chance for a taste of France by dining at fish and sea food restaurant Le Detroit, 7 Boulevard de la Resistance, Calais.  A choice of 18 or 27 set meals - or you could have a steak tournedos at 22 euros.  A very good bottle of Haut Medoc was 27 with wines starting at 18.
