Trains

Did you know... four million people a year use Cannes railway station?

NEW TRAIN TIMETABLE STARTS 11 DECEMBER 2011 - considerable changes predicted to all services

see www.horaires2012-sncf.com  to check train times: put in departure and arrival stations and the date

Clearly Cannes station has felt the influence of the Film Festival.  Murals on film themes are everywhere in Cannes.

Cannes railway station is hated by the locals and for 20 years successive mayors have tried to have it improved.
Unfortunately, the renovation of the station meant the loss of its mural.

Work started in April this year (2011) and everything should be completed by spring 2014. SNCF predicts the number of passengers using the station to double by 2020 - amounting to 25,000 people a day. Incroyable!

The best way to travel the Cote d'Azur is by train.  Local trains (TER) are efficient, comfortable and normally on time.  Prices are reasonable, for example: Cannes to Frejus (old Roman town) return costs 6.10€ and 4.60 for the over 60's.  Nice is 4.90€ (3.70€) and Ventimiglia in Italy is 10.50€(7.90€)

Between June and September the Carte Isabelle ticket allows you to travel all day for just 12€ on any line in the Alpes-Maritimes and Ventimiglia in first or second class. This ticket can also be used on the scenic Roya Valley railway from Nice to Tende. All tickets are available at Cannes station from the ticket counter or machines (see left - personally I have never managed to work them) and if you are very, very clever go to the French Railways site.

Mind you if you think the TGV is fast have a look at what was achieved in 1953 in England.  SEE FILM
