MOUGINS

Exquisite church open to the public

Balloon artwork new for 2011

Thirty art galleries and studios to explore

Mougins is the nearest “perched village” to Cannes. By day it can be reached from Cannes on the 630V, S and VS bus routes to the new town and then walk or grab a bus up to the old village.  If you have a car it is a romantic place for dinner and there is lots of parking available.

“Eat your art out” best sums up this marvellous village which is both a gastronomic and art lovers’ delight. Whether you visit during the day or evening the shops, artists’ studios and galleries are open.

Do explore this snail shaped village which dates back to Roman times and where Picasso spent the last years of his life, 1961-73. The village today has 30 art galleries and workshops.

Mougins can be proud of its gastronomic heritage and celebrates this in September with its International Festival of Gastronomy – not to be missed.  In the old village itself there are restaurants to suit all pockets.

Recommended are Resto des Arts (set meals from 22€), a firm favourite with locals and L’Amandier, which has just had a successful make-over, with its gorgeous terraces and great views towards Grasse (see website)

La Place de Mougins has a new owner-chef and has been redesigned. Enjoy it now as this chef is clearly loking for a Michelin star. Lunch menus from 25 euros and dinner from 45.

On the edge of the old village is the renowned Le Mas Candille hotel, spa and restaurant. You can dine at the poolside restaurant, La Pergola, or at the Michelin starred Restaurant Candille.

Rendezvous des Mougins is a centrally situated local's place where a two course lunch starts at 14€ - very good.

The winter exhibition at the Eco Park in Mougins starts on Saturday 22 October.  A great day out for all the family with something for everyone from three to 93. There are six themes including sleep, the body, archeology, games and a science village. There's also a cafe and outdoor play area. It is open 10am-6pm Wednesdays, weekends and school holidays, and everyday from 1-11 November. Closed Christmas and New Year's Days. Entry costs adults seven euros and children and students five euros. The Eco Park can be reached from the A8, aire de Breguieres north or south, or by Navette (bus) Sillage 24, Mon-Sat, from Haddad Simon, Cannes at 10am, 12.10pm and 2pm.

Finishes 22 March 2012.

An absolute gem of a museum has opened. Called the Musee d'Art Classique, 32 rue Commandeur in the old village, it has a fabulous array of 600 artefacts from the Egyptian, Greek, Roman and Persian classical periods. It also ingeniously mixes 100 items of relevant contemporay art - from Picasso, Cocteau, Man Ray, Chagal etc - among these ancient art pieces.  So cleverly is it done that often one has to think twice about what one is looking at.

Housed in an old village house - a maximum of 40 people will be admitted at any one time - the four floors can be reached by stairs or a four-walled glass lift. It also includes modern touch screen information panels.  The museum houses a private collection whose owner wanted the public to enjoy it as well.  The museum is run by an English couple and French, English, German and Italian tours will be available. Open 9.30am to 8.30pm (7pm in winter).  Entry 15 pp (5€ over 60's)

Expensive to get in but cannot recommend it too highly.

The village also has a small museum of photography, the 8th art, with a collection of pictures from top photographers.

Mougins is much more than the village itself and boasts two golf courses, woodland areas for walks and picnics and more than 40 restaurants, many at the foot of the old village on the way to Valbonne.
