Cafés

Le Grand Café opposite the old port is a traditional all day and evening large French café.  A huge selection of dishes, salads, oysters of all types and sizes, fish - there is a tuna and red mullet with potatoes and vegetables dish at 13.50€ - steaks from a sirloin steak at 15.50€ to a Chateaubriand for two at 42€ (all including chips or salad).

Good place for drinks at reasonable prices.

During the day it is an excellent place to view the pétanque players (see Pétanque) and in the evening there is music and karaoke (oh no!).

Want a spot of lunch between shopping?  Open from midday to 3.30pm is Esmeralda at 6 rue Tony Allard just off rue d'Antibes.  A rumpsteak with a creamy pepper and cognac sauce will set you back no more than 14€50, spag bol 10€50 and a Salade Niçoise the same. There are also some regional salads such as the Strasbourgeoise of sausage, potatoes, mustard and cruditées, reflecting the difference of climate. Tel: 04 92 98 18 77

For an excellent Italian cup of coffee Da Laura at the junction of rue Hoche and rue 24 Août, in the heart of the shopping district, is a good

 place to watch the passers by.

Open all day in a trendy atmosphere with the drone of the parmesan

grinder in the background, you can sample mozzarella salad, basil gnocchis;

raviolis and artichokes; spaghetti with clam or squid sauce; cakes, tarts and tiramisu.

Laura, the hands on owner, never lacks for new ideas. The wines are of course Italian. Tel: 04 93 38 40 51.

Coffee, tea and drinks all available outside lunch hours.

It's a challenge to find this excellent family run worker's cafe but well worth the effort.

Chez Marc open from 7am to 3pm, provides a great value

four course lunch with a carafe of wine for 13.50€.  My starter was egg in aspic followed by a very generous main course of lasagna.

 Cheese and fruit followed although I could have had chocolate tart (the French are mad on chocolate). A strong coffee cost me only 1.35€.  The place was packed. In the summer you can eat outside.

The address is Le Cannet Rocheville.  It is to be found on Impasse Campelière, a cul de sac off Chemin des Campelières, signposted at the junction with Avenue du Mont Joli.
