The town is famous throughout France for its October Book Fair.  It includes debates and literary cafes - with discussions with authors, films and a literary concert. About 350 authors attend plus 50,000 enthusiasts. It is great to visit if only to soak up the atmosphere. It costs 4 euros for the three day pass. See www.lefestivaldulivre.fr

Mouans-Sartoux is easily reached by train from Cannes - 15-20 minutes on the Grasse line, 5.40€ return - or by bus.  By car it is on the road to Grasse just beyond Mougins.  The old town is criss-crossed by narrow streets adjoining the Chateau de Mouans-Sartoux with its beautiful gardens, where various events are held including concerts. Art exhibitions are held in the l'Espace de l'Art Concret(see right) in the grounds of the chateau.

The town also holds events such as the book fair in autumn and an organic gourmet fair in late summer (well, the mayor is a member of the Green Party). The old church near the chateau is famous for its modern stained glass windows. Well worth a visit.

Excellent but inexpensive restaurants are to be found in the old town.

At 1 Place Suzanne de Villeneuve is Le Sot l'y Laisse which means "there you are" - it is also the succulent "oyster" of a chicken. Three course set menus start at 21€. Tel: 04 93 75 54 50.

Nearby at number 16, Le P'tit Coin Nature has a cocktail called zizi-coin coin see how to make it and serves pizzas from 7.50€ and steak tartare at 15€, tel: 04 93 12 90 98.

Right in the heart of the old town is Fidji, a restaurant specialising in traditional dishes such as a cassoulet with lentils (in season).  In summer they have tables outside.  In winter the dining room is across the street from the kitchens but they manage all right. Food excellent.

In the main square, 1 Place du Générale de Gaulle, is Café Terrasse which specialises in seafood. You can splash out on half a lobster for 21€. Antipasti is 20€ and a delicious Coquille St Jacques is 21€.  Wash it down with a half a litre of rose for 7€.

Highly recommended.
